Trace the protesters’ journey along Mumbai’s JJ Flyover, Crawford Market, CST and finally, Azad Maidan
Lakhs of Marathas took to Mumbai’s streets on Wednesday morning, painting the town saffron. From 5-year-old children to senior citizens, participants marched from Byculla to Azad Maidan. Here’s a look at how their journey unfolded:
Though the march was slated for 11 am, groups began to assemble as early as 9 am.
Crowds gathered at the starting point at the designated time. Twenty minutes later, they began marching slowly, led by women and children. Police estimate that there were at least 1.5 lakh participants.
A serpentine queue of participants reached JJ Flyover around 11.40 am.
Several displayed pride in their community by dressing as either Maratha king Shivaji or his mother Jijabai.
From JJ Flyover, protesters marched on towards Crawford Market, and then towards CST, where they were given water and biscuits.
In the meantime, 3,500 volunteers began cleaning the city’s streets and disposing of trash left behind by protesters.
