Thane woman confesses to strangling the infant because it was handicapped.

The mother of a nine-month-old infant girl has surrendered to the police 15 days after throwing her baby into the Thane. The woman allegedly realised her mistake and went to the police station on Monday to confess her wrongdoing. She requested the police team to carry out a search operation at the creek but officials were unable to trace the body of infant.

The mother, identified as Yashodha Kiran Cheda, 30, from Lokmanya Nagar, reportedly killed her baby because she was physically challenged. She allegedly committed the act on May 18, but recognised her wrongdoing and later disclosed her crime to the Thane Nagar police.

“She revealed her act saying that her family is not economically strong enough to take care of the physically challenged child, hence she took the drastic step,” said senior police inspector MV Dharmadhikari.

“On May 18, Cheda strangled her baby and then took the body to Kalwa creek where she threw it into the water. After a few days, when her family members interrogated her about the child, she claimed that she has left the infant at her mother’s home for few days. As days passed, her in-laws grew suspicious and forced her to bring back the child. This was when she revealed the truth and surrendered herself to the police,” Dharmadhikari said.

The official said that while search operations were carried out at the Kalwa creek, they were unable to find the baby’s body. The case has been registered against Cheda, under the section 102 and 201 of Indian Panel Code. The mother has been taken into police custody and will be produced before the court today.
