Citizens can submit their suggestions and objections within seven days; the fully underground Metro-3 line will connect south Mumbai to the western suburbs.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has called for suggestions/objections from citizens on cutting 444 trees in Aarey Milk Colony for the construction of the Metro-3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) line. According to a notice issued by the tree authority of the BMC, the reason they wish to cut the trees is because they fall at places where ramp needs to be constructed and excavation needs to be done for the Metro line.

Metro-3 will be a fully underground line connecting south Mumbai to the western suburbs. The 33.5-km-long line will have 27 stations on it.

Sources said Shiv Sena, which is the ruling party in the BMC, can also reject the proposal. Sena has been against cutting of trees for Metro construction in Aarey since a long time.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) proposed to cut a total of 3,130 trees in Aarey Colony to construct a car depot for the Metro-3 line. However, the proposal has been strongly opposed by green activists. Zoru Bhatena, an activist, said, "The tree authority should not give permission as the National Green Tribunal has put a stay on the work. Even the collector has denied permission for cutting trees."

In a response to the query sent by HT, an MMRCL spokesperson said, "MMRCL conducts all its activities in a legal manner by taking necessary approvals form the respective competent authorities. Suggestions and instructions if any given by the competent authorities are also adhered to by the MMRCL and their contractors."
