Teens held for assaulting, abusing Mumbai traffic cop
The cop said that when he took out his phone to record the incident, one of the accused threatened him, saying he would get a sword and kill him
The Deonar police arrested two men who allegedly assaulted and abused an on-duty traffic police constable at the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road on Wednesday.
Sanjay Rane, 44, attached to Mankhurd traffic chowky, was posted at the highway junction. He noticed that two dumpers were blocking vehicular traffic. When he told the drivers to move, they started abusing him.
Rane said that when he took out his phone to record the incident, one of the men threatened him, saying he would get a sword and kill him.
He left, while the other assaulted Rane, who later narrated the incident to his superior.
After Rane asked police to file a complaint, two teams began the search for Ubaid Shah, 18, and Saddam Shah, 19, whose photos Rane had clicked on his mobile phone.
Police sub inspector Pradeep Bhitade said he got a tip-off on Friday, informing him that the two men were hiding on the terrace near a public toilet at Kamla Raman Nagar in Baiganwadi. When the team reached the spot, the two jumped from the terrace to escape, however, Bhitade nabbed them.
Police said Ubaid’s father is a gambler, while Saddam’s father owns an illegal parking business.
“We arrested the two under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and 506 (2) criminal intimidation of the Indian Penal Code. They will appear before the court on Saturday,” said Bhitade.
“I had told the two men that I was just doing my duty and that they needed to move as they were obstructing traffic,” said Rane.
Police inspector Namdev Shinde said repairs at the bridge necessitated that the service road be shut. As the number of lanes for traffic were reduced, incidents of road rage were reported.
