An Ahmedabad-based jeweller, who allegedly duped a jeweller in Mumbai of ornaments worth Rs1 crore, was arrested on Friday. Two Bangalore jewellers are absconding.
The police said the complainant, whose name the police did not wish to reveal, met one of the absconding accused and Mitesh Shah, 35, in February 2011.
Shah visited the complainant's office in April and selected ornaments worth Rs1 crore and said he would return to collect them. A month later, Shah returned and said a jeweller in Bangalore wanted the ornaments urgently. "Shah made the complainant speak to a person in Bangalore over the phone. Convinced that the two were reliable, the complainant handed over the ornaments to Shah, who promised to return in eight days," said an officer.
When after 10 days the complainant contacted Shah, he made excuses and stopped answering calls. The complainant then fell sick and was in hospital for three months. After he was discharged, he approached the police. "Shah has been arrested for cheating. We are trying to trace the two others," said Avinash Sonawane, senior inspector.
