Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Friday said that the Marathi manoos has continued to live in Maharashtra because of the Sena and its movements for the past 40 years and it was time to decide whether to stick with the original party or move on to a copy.

Thackeray had called the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena floated by his nephew, Raj, a “carbon copy” of the Sena.

He warned that Mumbai was on the verge of being split from Maharashtra. “The Shiv Sena will not spare those who are out to divide Maharashtra,” Thackeray said in an interview to party mouthpiece, Saamna on Friday. “We will pounce on them like tigers.”

Thackeray also opposed the demand for a separate Vidarbha state. He also criticised “good friend” NCP president Sharad Pawar. “I know Pawar and his family since he was a nobody. One thing I can say about Pawar is that you cannot trust his words in politics.”

Terming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi an “Italian son,” Thackeray ridiculed Gandhi’s travel in a local train in Mumbai in February. He said the train had deliberately been kept empty with guards posted in it so that Gandhi could travel comfortably.

Thackeray criticises Marathi dept

Thackeray ridiculed CM Ashok Chavan’s announcement of an independent department for preserving Marathi. The Sena chief said such departments couldn’t revive a losing language. “In Tamil Nadu, there is a separate Rs 300-crore budget to implement the use of the local language in courts. The state will have to take such practical decisions if it is keen on saving the language.”
