Ganpati Gavare studied through the noise in his one-room home in a Prabhadevi chawl and scored 87.66% in the HSC exam.
“We live in a small room, and there’s hardly any space and quiet. But my son has done extremely well under the circumstances,” said Ganpati’s father Prathmesh, who works with Thane Municipal Corporation and earns a monthly salary of Rs 19,000.
Students from poor backgrounds left many of their well-off contemporaries behind in the HSC exams. Sapna Chawan is the first in her family to have scored above 90% in Class 12. Her father is a liftman.
“I expected to do well as I had worked hard,” said Chawan, 17, who studied at Bhavani Shankar Junior Science College, Dadar.
“It is amazing that these students have performed so well despite their disadvantages,” said Praveen Tyagi from IITian’s Pace, a coaching class, which tied up with Bhavani Shankar Junior Science College and Ratanbhai Walbhai School and Junior College, Mulund, three years ago. Both colleges do not charge fees for students from municipal schools.
