Officials are trying to merge the existing two corridors and the new lines, with the TMS system.

Officials, however, claim that the main difficulty has been taken care of and that they are in process of procuring new indicators that can merge with the TMS system. There are other minor technical glitches that also have to be taken care of before it can be extended till Kalyan, officials added.

“We are in the final stages of starting the system and will introduce it soon,” said V Malegaonkar, chief PRO, Central Railway.

Sources said that even after installation, the system would take around four-six months to function smoothly. This system will ease travelling for commuters on CR because they will be able to see the precise time of a train’s arrival at the platform.

This system will also have an enhanced announcement system inside trains and will reduce the occurrences of wrong announcements made at platforms.

Commuters will also be informed of last-minute diversion at stations before hand. Officials monitoring the control room will know the exact location of a train at any given time.

Therefore, if a train as halted at a particular location because of technical errors such as a signal failure, the control room can quickly get in touch with the motorman and the stationmaster and get information.

“In such a situation, commuters will also be informed of the approximate time it would take to revive services,” said a senior CR official on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

A similar system was installed on the Western Railway in 2004, though the TMS on CR is advanced in nature.
