Dead whale at Juhu: 8 previous times mammals washed ashore in Mumbai

A 35-foot-long whale washed ashore at the Juhu beach in Mumbai on Thursday evening. This is the 9th such instance of dead mammals washing ashore in Mumbai since 2015.

Carcasses of 38 baleen whales were washed ashore recently near the Tiruchendur beach in Tamil Nadu while more than 250 whales stranded in shallow waters were pushed back into the deep sea.

Here is a list of eight other incidents reported last year in Mumbai.

December 13 Carcass of a two-and-a-half foot finless porpoise, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, was washed ashore near Haji Ali Dargah.
November 27 Carcass of a six-and-a-half-foot Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin washed ashore near Bhagwanlal Indrajit Road, Malabar Hill.
July 22 A six-foot-long carcass of an Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin with various injuries on its body was discovered on Bhuigaon beach in Vasai. The high tide carried it back into the sea, said local fishermen.
June 17 The carcass of a seven-foot-long dolphin was found on Vasai beach.
June 1 The mutilated carcass of a humpback whale was found on Manori beach. Only the skin and skeleton of the whale could be recovered, as all the other body parts were decomposed; it could not been sent for a post-mortem.
May 5 The carcasses of a six-feet-long Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin and a four-feet-long Finless Porpoise were found at Versova beach. A post-mortem was conducted on them on Wednesday and they were burnt at an isolated location in Andheri.

April 27 A six-foot long dead dolphin was found wedged in the rocks near Oberoi Hotel at Nariman Point. The carcass was so decomposed that a post-mortem could not identify the cause of death.
