Starting next month, the state transport commissioner’s office will start a drive against those using red, amber or blue beacons on their vehicles illegally or those with improper, unreadable number plates.

“It is observed that some motorists use beacons although they are not entitled to use it. Also, in some cases, the number plates of vehicles are not readable,” states the release issued by the transport commissioner’s office.

Acting on the Supreme Court directives to keep the use of red-amber beacons restricted to constitutional posts and emergency vehicles, the state government recently pruned its earlier list of VIP and VVIPs entitled to use beacons and sirens. According to RTO sources, the penalty for illegal use of beacon and defective number plate is just Rs100, which fails to act as a deterrent.

“We are publicising the drive through the media, so people can take correctives steps to avoid inconvenience,” said a senior traffic official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
