A report prepared by health authorities at Mokhada in Thane district, where an 11 month- old tribal girl died of pneumonia on Tuesday owing to alleged medical negligence, has clearly established that the child was severely malnourished.
The local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) said he would be making a personal inspection of the medical facilities available at the rural hospital before fixing responsibilities for the child’s death.
“I learnt about the incident from the report [HT report on Thursday]. The issue has also been raised in the Legislative Council. Right now I am in Mumbai for the monsoon session of the state legislature. I will raise the issue in the house [assembly] on Friday,” said Chintaman Bhanga, MLA from Jawhar.
He said on Saturday he would be making a spot inspection of the rural hospital at Nandgaon, where the child was admitted to find out why she could not be treated there and who was responsible for the negligence.
He said there was no need to refer the critically ill child for treatment to the sub-district hospital at Jawhar as the cottage hospital at Mokhada should have had three qualified doctors as per the official allocation.
Asked why health officials did not take note of the child’s deteriorating health and provide care accordingly, additional resident collector, Jawhar, Datta Bhadakwar, said,
“Health authorities should look into it. I will be submitting the report to the district collector.”
HT on Thursday carried a report (left) on the death of 11-month-old Priya Ajay Kirkira from Bhanderchiwadi in Nandgaon, in Thane district.
The malnourished child was initially admitted to the Nangaon hospital but was then referred to the Jawhar hospital.
