Air traffic controllers ordered the pilots of an arriving Jet Airways flight to "go around" about 700 feet (200 metres) off the ground after an IndiGo jet strayed into its path on Thursday evening, the airport said.

A "go-around" is where a plane abandons its approach and pulls up.

The Jet Airways flight from the eastern city of Kolkata was carrying 108 passengers and six crew while the IndiGo jet, which was leaving for the southern city of Bangalore, had 178 people on board.

A Jet Airways spokesman was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency that it was "normal practice to perform a go-around in such cases".

"The incident is being investigated by the concerned authorities," he added.

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh, told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the aircraft overshot the taxiway by only a few metres (feet) but did not stray on to the runway, blaming faulty lights for the incident.

A Mumbai airport spokesman added in the Daily News and Analysis newspaper: "Lights on a stretch of the taxiway were working intermittently due to a circuit problem."

Air traffic control was informed and a "follow me" vehicle was available to take planes to the runway, he added.
