The quartet figured out how to execute the abduction without meeting the victim’s kin after watching a 1978 Bollywood movie, Inkaar. “The four men confessed that they had seen the movie a few days before the kidnapping,” said Nitin Patil, assistant police inspector attached with the west region special squad.
The police said Niranjan Mishra, Vedprakash Yadav, Abdul Sattar and Vinod Pandey had recceed areas like Ghatkopar and Kurla to zero in on the child of a wealthy person. “However, they did not find a victim and finally went to Bandra. The accused and the complainant do not know each other,” said Patil.
The police exercised patience in nabbing the accused, even though they knew about their activities from the phone calls that were being made to the boy’s father Pravin Fernandes. They were arrested only after Eric was sent home on Tuesday.
The police said that the accused used 12 mobile phones in three days. While one was used for calling Fernandes, the others were meant for communicating with each other.
On Tuesday, the accused asked Fernandes to board the Sahyadri Express and throw the bag off the train before it arrives at Karjat station. However, Fernandes was then told that the location has been changed to Vangni, and thereafter to Shelu station.
After the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers made Eric sit in an auto rickshaw at Bandra-Kurla Complex and sent him home.
