Pervez Tak, the main accused in the kidnapping case of actor Laila Khan, was brought to the city on Sunday from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) by the Mumbai crime branch amidst heavy security.
Joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy confirmed that Tak was brought into the city at night. "We will be producing him before court on Monday and after getting police custody we will begin questioning him," he said.
Officials said on Sunday that Tak was brought to Jammu from Kishtwar by afternoon and the crime branch team took a connecting flight from Jammu to Mumbai via New Delhi. Heavy security was in place when Tak was brought to the city, given the significance of the case.
Tak has been booked in the kidnapping case of Khan and five members of her family, who went missing in 2011. A complaint was registered by Laila's father, Nadir Patel. Crime branch will also question Tak in connection with the fire which broke out in Khan's Igatpuri farm house.
The crime branch is also likely to arrest Asif Sheikh, Khan's stepfather. Patel in his complaint had alleged that Pervez and Asif were responsible for the kidnapping of Khan and her relatives, which he claims occurred on February 2011. Police officials said they were aware where he was but he is yet to be arrested or questioned. "We are waiting for Tak's custody and the two will be made to face each other during questioning," officials said.
Tak was in J&K police's custody for three cheating cases.
Khan and her family were last spotted in Igatpuri (near Nashik), with Tak, apparently her mother's boyfriend, in February, though crime branch officials say that, according to cell phone records, Khan and one of her kidnapped sisters had last been in Mumbai.
When leaving Igatpuri, they told their house's caretaker they were going to Kishtwar in Jammu to attend a wedding and would return in two months. A few days later, Khan's Igatpuri house was set on fire.
