"Till today, one crore and two thousand members have been enrolled in the state," state BJP office incharge Mukund Kulkarni told PTI in Mumbai.

BJP workers, led by water resources minister Girish Mahajan, former Union minister Jaywantiben Mehta burst firecrackers outside the state BJP office in south Mumbai to celebrate achieving the one crore target, set by state BJP president Raosaheb Danve.

Maharashtra BJP had geared up its organisational machinery to swell its ranks in the state's rural heartland, especially in Congress and NCP bastions.

The party, which has a fragile alliance with the Shiv Sena, is preparing groundwork in case the need arises to go solo.

"In the membership drive, we have made our way into new socio-economic groups," a party functionary said.
