The Maharashtra crime investigation department (CID) has launched a hunt for Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator from Mohol, Ramesh Kadam, two days after he was booked for allegedly misusing his position to siphon off Rs 141-crore to organisations he controls.

CID officials said Kadam used his position as chairman of the gover nment-run Annabhau Sathe Development Corporation to transfer funds meant for the welfare of backward communities to other organisations he heads. On Tuesday, officials arrested a relative of Kadam’s, Laxmi Lokhande from Akluj, and detained his sister in Pune.

The CID registered the FIR against Kadam and three others on Saturday.

The charges against him include illegally sanctioning Rs 41 crore to a central cooperative society he controls, and Rs 58 crore to set up a spinning mill in Aurangabad — which also is under his control.

Kadam al s o made various other t ransactions on behalf of the Annabhau Sathe Development Corporation, causing financial losses to the Corporation, the FIR against the MLA said.

CID chief Sanjay Kumar told Hindustan Times the investigations so far showed Rs 141 crore has been misused, but this amount may increase as the probe proceeds. “We are sure the scam will deepen, as we investigate,” Kumar said.

The CID chief said different teams were looking for Kadam. “We have got all his mobile phones too,” Kumar said.

On Sunday, the CID had raided Kadam’s Borivli flat and the Joshaba Central Cooperative Society. But investigators could not trace Kadam, who has been missing since the FIR was registered. Kadam was last known to have been in Solapur to address a press conference, which he left mid-way, on hearing about the CID’s probe. The probe against Kadam began last year, when the Congress-NCP alliance was in power, but it was handed over to the CID only recently.

Kadam joins a list of NCP leaders under the government’s scanner for alleged irregularities, including Chhagan Bhujbal, former deputy CM Ajit Pawar and the party’s state unit chief Sunil Tatkare.
