To accelerate work on a proposed new Road Over Bridge (ROB) — over the current subway — meant to improve connectivity between SV Road and the Western Express Highway service road, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to resettle nearly 325 families, or project affected people (PAP) from the vicinity of the subway, to new quarters at Vile Parle plot number 398.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has handed over the new plot to MMRDA, which has started preliminary work on constructing the building. To temporarily accommodate the PAP, before their new permanent location is ready, MCGM recently issued a No Objection Certificate to construct transit quarters for them on plot number 1825 at Vile Parle.

The project is meant to improve traffic flow between the two points, especially during the monsoon, when the subway – located below sea level – gets water logged after a few days of continuous rain, sending traffic backed up on both sides of the subway.

Work on the ROB began in January 2008, but stopped after the PAP refused to vacate the plot, demanding their new quarters be in the vicinity of the subway, and because the requisite permissions from the railways were delayed. The new deadline is December 2010.

“Preliminary work on the transit quarters has begun – they will be ready soon.

Work on improving connectivity between SV Road and the Western Express Highway service road, through the Milan subway ROB, is expected to begin once the PAP are rehabilitated,” said Ashwini Bhide, joint metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

The estimated cost of building the 700-m bridge is Rs 41.5 crore. The bridge will have two carriageways, each with two lanes.
