-- April 15: Kasab's state-appointed lawyer is sacked by the judge as the case is about to open due to her links to a potential prosecution witness.

-- April 16: A new lawyer, Abbas Kazmi, is appointed.

-- April 17: Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam opens his case, alleging the plot was hatched in Pakistan and was the product of that country's "institutionalised terror culture".

-- April 28: medical tests show Kasab was over 18 at the time of the attacks. He had said he was a minor and should not be tried in an adult court.

-- May 6: Kasab pleads not guilty to all 86 charges against him.

-- July 20: Kasab changes his plea to guilty, admitting taking part in the attack on Mumbai's main railway station and detailing how he and the nine other gunmen were trained by Pakistan-based extremists.

-- July 23: The judge rules the trial should continue as Kasab's guilty plea was only a partial admission and did not cover all the charges.

-- November 30: Kazmi is dismissed by the judge for "not cooperating with the court" and time-wasting.

-- December 16: Prosecution case closes.

-- December 18: Kasab retracts his confession, saying it was made under pressure and that he was framed by police.

2010

-- March 22: The court rejects an application for US-Pakistani national David Coleman Headley, who admitted scouting targets for the attacks, to give evidence.

-- March 31: The judge adjourns the case to consider his verdict.

-- May 3: Kasab found guilty of most of the 86 charges against him, including murder and waging war against India, which carry the death penalty.

-- May 6: Judge M.L. Tahaliyani sentences Kasab to death by hanging.
