A senior citizen was arrested in Mumbai for handing over a fake Rs 100 note while buying ice cream on Monday. The police said the elderly man had brought 20 fake Rs 100 notes from Madhya Pradesh to circulate in Mumbai.
The Goregaon police investigating the case arrested the man after the ice cream vendor approached them with the complaint late Monday. The police said the accused bought ice cream from the complainant, Rajan Pal, who has a stall at Goregaon (West).
He paid with the Rs 100 note, but Pal noticed that the currency did not look genuine. He alerted the police and the man was taken into custody.
“We have arrested the man. While searching him, we found 12 counterfeit notes of Rs 100,” said Suresh Shinde, assistant commissioner of police, Goregaon division.
During interrogation, the accused told the police he was given 20 notes from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. He has already circulated eight of those in the city.
The accused has been booked for cheating under sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested. He was produced before the metropolitan court on Tuesday.
