Your supply of milk may be hit from the next week. After stopping the sale of five major brands in Thane, milk suppliers are planning to extend the boycott to Mumbai.

The decision on this will be taken in a meeting of milk suppliers and retailers on Sunday, sources said.

The suppliers are threatening to stop the sale of Gokul, Mahanand, Warana, Mother Dairy and Amul milk, unless the companies increase their commission. However, they said consumers will not be affected, as other milk brands

have been asked to increase their supply.

More than 2,500 milk suppliers and vendors are expected to participate in Sunday’s meeting.

“We will make sure there is no milk shortage even if we ban the five brands. We are talking to other companies to ensure sufficient supply. The protest is only to demand a higher commission from the five brands,” said Ashok Juvle, president of Navnirman Milk Supplier Sangh, Mumbai.

Suppliers have alleged the companies pay them very less commission, because of which they are forced to violate rules and overcharge consumers to make a profit.

With the legal metrology organisation cracking down on overcharging, the suppliers and shop keepers have decided to demand a higher commission from milk companies.

On Wednesday, the sale of Gokul and Mahanand milk fell by nearly 6%, as Thane milk suppliers refused to sell these brands. Generally, Gokul sells 6 lakh litres of milk across the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR), while Mahanand sells 3 lakh litres.

However, on Wednesday, the figures fell to 35,000 litres for Gokul and 20,000 litres for Mahanand.

“We have informed our higher management about the unrest among the suppliers. They will find a solution soon,” said an official from Gokul, requesting anonymity.
