Police investigations, however, revealed it was a ploy by Yadav to teach the three a lesson for not supporting him during the recent civic elections.

Police arrested Yadav and 17 of his accomplices. They were produced at Central Business District court in the afternoon which remanded them to police custody till May 7.

Pappu, Prakash and Munna, who were allegedly beaten up, are recuperating at Indravati hospital in Airoli, having suffered multiple fractures.

Tension spread in the politically sensitive Rabale area of Airoli, as news spread of gunshots being fired at Yadav, who “narrowly missed two bullets.”

The police including Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe and Assistant Commissioner of Police Purshottam Karad, rushed to the spot soon after the `incident’ that reportedly took place at around 11.30 pm.

Following their investigation, the police suspected that the corporator was misleading them. Assistant Commissioner of Police Purshottam Karad said, “Following Yadav’s interrogation we realised that what he was saying was not possible because his version of events seemed overly dramatised.”

“We then investigated further and based on the information we got, we decided to arrest him and his accomplices in the morning.” Karad said.

“We booked him under the arms act, for attempt to murder and for rioting. We want to send out a message that one can’t get away with treating the law with such disdain,” he said.

While Yadav has several previous criminal cases of rioting registered against him, he now finds himself charged for very serious crimes.
