The 56 CCTVs, which include uni-directional and 360-degree cameras, were set up at spots in sensitive areas that were identified by the police and local politicians jointly.

Mumbai, and the ones in and around Ganesh Murthy Nagar are still functional, the police said.

“We are looking into the matter. It is important and we will do the needful soon,” said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region).

The police expected these cameras to help them spot suspicious activities in the area.

Areas selected for CCTV installation included important junctions, high-security zones and major slum pockets such as Ambedkar Nagar, Geeta Nagar, Ganesh Murthy Nagar and Badhwar Park.

“As time passed and the rapes and murders took a backseat, nobody cared for the CCTVs. We had to persuade locals to allow the recorder and footage monitoring systems to be put up at their residences, but now, with no proper maintenance and lack of funds, the whole setup is in a sorry state,” said an inspector from Cuffe Parade police station, requesting anonymity.
