“The accused are not showing any repentance for their actions,” said Samad Shaikh, senior police.

“They have attempted similar crimes but the cases went unreported. Most couples who sit here come without their parents’ knowledge and so they think approaching the police will only invite trouble,” added Shaikh.

In Saturday's incident, the police had no leads to go on except a skull cap, which Shirke said one of the accused was wearing.

“When the girl mentioned the skull cap, we suspected she was talking about Khan because he always wears that cap. The boys are heavily into drugs and two of them had been sent to a rehabilitation centre a year ago from where they had fled,” Shaikh said.

They would usually target couples because the accused were aware that they would not go and report the incident to the police.

Each of the four accused have several cases of theft registered against them with the Bandra police station, the police said.

On Saturday, the quartet approached the couple and asked them to hand over their belongings. When Yadav and Shirke told them that they had nothing on them, the accused tried to slash the girl’s wrist in an attempt to snatch the bag. This is when Yadav intervened and was stabbed in the abdomen by Riyaz.

Since the incident, the police have taken precautionary measures. "We have been carrying out combing operations at Bandra Bandstand and Reclamation," Shaikh, said. The accused were have been remanded to police custody till March 4.
