Scrap breach of privilege motion’ : Dilip Patil
Assembly speaker Dilip Walse-Patil told Maharahtra assembly that he wanted to do away with a provision that allows legislators to move a breach of privilege motion against any person.
Even as questions are being raised over the privileges granted to elected representatives, Assembly speaker Dilip Walse-Patil told the assembly that he wanted to do away with a provision that allows legislators to move a breach of privilege motion against any person.
The statement on Thursday shocked the lower House, which was witnessing a series of breach of privilege motions being moved after the question hour.
Most of them were against government servants, who were accused of disrespecting legislators.
The MLAs demanded that the Speaker ask the chief minister to hold a meeting over the issue.
Upset with more than 350 motions moved by members across parties, Walse-Patil said that every member should understand their role.
“Of the 350, only 8-10 motions were cleared by the privilege committee for admission. I want to remove the provision from the existing rules... We are wasting our time. I will discuss the issue with group leaders soon.”
When legislators complained that government servants were not cooperating with them, Walse-Patil said that the members were free to demand action under the relevant laws.
“There are laws that determine a period for keeping files pending.”
He asked the subordinate legislative committee to draft bylaws, failing which he said the aggrieved legislators could do the job.
