Shiv Sena workers on Wednesday foiled an attempt by the Youth Congress cadres to stage a street play outside Sena Bhavan at Shivaji Park, mocking the alleged presence of a party worker’s son at the party.
Sena cadres allegedly assaulted three Congress workers who were saved by the timely intervention of police personnel. Some policemen were also allegedly injured.
Bhushan Desai, son of Sena legislator Subhash Desai, was allegedly present in the party, which was busted by the police on Sunday.
Another reason for staging the play was because Mount View, the resort where the party was organised, is owned by Aparjit Mittal, chief coordinator, Yuva Sena (Raigad).
A large number of Sena workers gathered outside Sena Bhavan.
According to Sena leader Anil Desai, the play was just a diversionary tactic used by the Congress workers.
“Our cadres feel that such a play was an attack on the Sena Bhavan and we will never allow such a thing to happen,” said Desai.
“We are suffering from such a massive price hike and the Congress is indulging in raking up such non-issues,” he added.
Throughout the afternoon, there were tensions simmering across the Shivaji Park area and the police had deployed a large number of its personnel.
However, the Youth Congress has slammed the strong-arm tactics adopted by the Sena. “We too can fight but we do not wish to create a law and order problem,” said Sadaf Aboli, president, Youth Congress.
“We just wanted to stage a play but the Sena created a scene and are currently armed with swords,” he added.
