The Mulund police on Sunday arrested four members of a family after they allegedly drove a woman to commit suicide by harassing her for dowry.
Nishi Jethwani (24) killed herself by jumping from the 27th floor of her residence at Runwal Pride at Mulund on Sunday morning. Police said the incident occurred at around 10.30 am.
“At the time of the incident, none of her family members were at home,” said Rajkumar Vhatkar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Zone VII).
He said that the husband and in laws of the woman have been arrested. “They have been charged with harassment,” he added. Those arrested are Nishi's husband Jitendra (29), his father Mulchand, mother Deepa and sister Sapna.
Sources at the Mulund police station said that the victim’s family had alleged that Nishi had been harrassed for dowry by her in-laws.
“They had a love marriage 13 months ago, but Nishi hailed from a middle class family while Jitendra was from an affluent family,” a source said while adding that Jitendra’s family started harassing Nishi for dowry a few months ago. Nishi’s father Nitin Soni has lodged the FIR against her in-laws.
Soni, speaking to Hindustan Times, said that his daughter was being harrassed for over 11 months before she took the extreme step.
He said she had been forced to give up her job at a leading share broking firm by her in-laws as a pre-condition for the marriage. “In September last year, we found that she was not given food for three days and was also beaten. We brought her home. She stayed for about two and half months and then returned there,” he said.
