Now, hear Thumris with a new twist!
While folk melodies have always intrigued young musicians to experiment with them, here’s your chance to listen to revamped versions of some legendary tunes by the masters themselves.
While folk melodies have always intrigued young musicians to experiment with them, here’s your chance to listen to revamped versions of some legendary tunes by the masters themselves. The father-son classical musician duo of Ajay and Abhijeet Pohankar, will present some experimental ‘thumris’ at their concert tonight, where they will also release their new album, Thumri Funk.
“I have been pursuing fusion music for a decade now. With this album, we have tried to make these age-old compositions interesting for the youth,” says keyboard and harmonium exponent, Abhijeet, adding, “My father is one of the finest thumri singers in the country, so we have picked the choicest of compositions and rearranged them with Western rhythms.”
Tonight’s concert will see the Pohankars introducing another instrument— the melodica, also known as the key-flute, at their city performance.
Having grown up in a home of classical musicians, ask Abhijeet if he ever received flak from his father for fusing traditional art with modern sonic textures and he replies, “I am grateful to my father who always encouraged me to explore new forms of music. I feel that what is missing among the Indian classical fraternity is that many of them are very rigid when it comes to experimenting with new sounds. But thankfully, there is a crossover audience that loves fusion and supports us.”
Catch Ajay and Abhijeet Pohankar perform and release their new album tonight at 7 pm, St Andrews Auditorium. Entry free.
