The boy’s family has alleged laxity on part of the school and claimed that the boy fell after he slipped on the wet floor. School has refuted the allegations. Post-mortem examination report is awaited.

A 10-year-old class 4 student of GD Goenka School in Indirapuram died after he fell on the second-floor corridor outside his classroom in the school complex on Tuesday morning. The boy’s family alleged negligence on part of the school authorities as the boy’s clothes were wet and there was a possibility that the floor was slippery due to uncleared water.

The deceased was identified as Arman Sehgal who lived in Vaishali locality of Ghaziabad. The boy’s father works as a marketing director with a private university in Sonepat, the police said.

The boy’s family said that they were informed of the incident only after the boy was rushed to Shanti Gopal Hospital. They also told mediapersons that the school was trying to hide facts and is not giving a clear picture of the incident.

“We were informed of the incident late by school authorities. All his clothes were wet and I not only doubt, but I am certain at this point that there was a presence of water on the floor. The school is trying to hide this point. They are saying that the boy’s clothes were wet due to urine discharge. Even the class teacher, in whose presence the incident took place, was brought before us later and only after repeated requests,” the boy’s mother said.

According to the school authorities, the incident took place around 7.50am when the boy was going from his classroom to another where he was scheduled to take a weekly unit test. The boy put his bag in his classroom and was carrying his pencil box to the other room, they said.

“He just fell on the floor while he was walking to the other classroom. We immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital but he did not survive. The incident is unfortunate and we will fully cooperate with his parents and the police for an investigation. There was no water on the floor and there was no water source in the vicinity of the incident spot,” Dr Kavita Sharma, school principal, said.

Priti Jaiswal, additional district magistrate (city), said that the boy was declared “brought dead” at nearby Shanti Gopal Hospital.

“We have ordered (the hospital authorities) to expedite the post-mortem examination and the police to register a complaint from his family. The post-mortem examination will be carried out by a panel of two doctors. We have also started inspection of the school to investigate the alleged laxity on part of the school authorities in the incident. We are trying to find out the circumstances that caused the boy to fall and die,” she said.

SC Dubey, station house officer of Indirapuram police station, said that his team also rushed to the school and inquired about the incident. “We are awaiting a formal complaint from the family and an FIR will be lodged at the earliest, upon receipt of the complaint. His family has said that they will lodge a complaint after studying the post-mortem report,” he said.

Despite repeated attempts by Hindustan Times, the hospital refused to comment on the nature of injuries suffered by the boy.
