In some instances, residents said that the garbage dumps in front of their houses are set on fire every morning, further worsening the air quality. The National Green Tribunal has banned opening garbage burning and directed all state agencies to check the practice.

Indirapuram residents said that garbage dumps in the locality can be seen emitting smoke every morning.

“The garbage dump is located adjacent to NH-24 and is in front of our society. Since the last two days, the garbage is burning and our residential society has been engulfed in smoke,” Anil Srivastava of Gaur Green City apartments in Vaibhav Khand said.

He said that residents have stopped taking morning walks due to the burning activity.

“We do not step out of the house in the morning. There is not only trouble in breathing but the smoke also gives out a bad stench. The situation is getting worse by the day,” Srivastava said.

Meanwhile, commuters are also having trouble navigating the area as a vacant plot on CISF link road that connects Indirapuram and Vasundhara is covered in a blanket of smoke.

“Garbage is being burnt on the vacant plot on the CISF link road that is right opposite to the Kanavani police post. It is not only leading to pollution but is also an accidental hazard as the road is almost invisible and it is also hard to see the vehicles on the other side due to the smoke,” Arnav Kumar, a commuter, said.

Officials said they will immediate take action to check garbage burning.

“We will identify the spots and stop garbage burning immediately. Those found burning garbage will be penalised,” YN Choudhary, Ghaziabad development authority’s enforcement in-charge, said.
