The advisory, issued on August 31, has come a tad too late. Seasonal change and incessant rain have taken a toll on the police personnel in districts such as Ghaziabad. A number of personnel in different police stations in the city are already down with fever and are off duty.

“Nearly 10%-15% staff in city police stations are suffering from fever. They are either on rest or admitted to hospitals for treatment,” said Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city).

The worst hit is Indirapuram police station where nearly 30 to 35 personnel are suffering from various ailments, including viral fever.

“We have a staff strength of nearly 200 personnel at our police station. A large number of them is suffering from viral fever. Nearly 35 persons are off duty currently. Police personnel are prone to mosquito bites as they have to undertake long duty hours in the open as well as at the office,” said Gorakhnath Yadav, station house officer, Indirapuram police station.

A similar situation prevails at Sahibabad police station, where nearly 27 personnel have fallen ill. At Link Road police station, nearly 15 personnel of a total strength of 90 are down with various seasonal ailments. Senior officers said another 6-7 personnel are suffering from viral fever at Modi Nagar police station.

The district health department officials said they have already started fogging drives at police stations and are waiting to carry out another round as soon as the rain lets off.

“We are ensuring that all police stations are covered under the fogging drive. The major problem is mosquitoes breeding in the stagnant water on the police station premises. Water accumulates here due to dumping of seized vehicles. Anyway, we will carry out another round of fogging and spraying of anti-larvae medicines at affected police stations,” said GK Mishra, district malaria officer.

As per official records, Ghaziabad has three confirmed cases of dengue. Another 34 suspected cases are being tested at the government laboratory.

“The suspected dengue cases will be verified soon. We also have eight confirmed cases of chikunguniya,” Mishra said.
