The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said on Thursday that work on the 3.5-km Kalindi Kunj to Botanic Garden Metro link is almost complete and its trial is expected to begin by mid-October. The DMRC is scheduled to open this driver-less line to public by the beginning of January. Earlier, the deadline for trial was September 1, 2016.

According to officials, the DMRC submitted its progress report after the Noida authority sought the same to know when the link between the airport and Noida would be opened for public.

“We have completed 100% of the work in most categories, including civil work. We have laid 2.5-km of the track and the remaining one km will be laid in the next 20 days. We will begin trial on this 3.5-km link by mid-October. Work on electricity lines generally gets completed during the trial itself,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, DMRC.

“After trial, the DMRC takes two to three months to conduct technical inspections on the line. If all goes well, this link could also be opened for public by the end of December 2016,” said Dayal.

On Thursday, the DMRC also started trial on the 9.5-km Okhla Vihar to Kalkaji Temple stretch in Delhi, which is part of the 37-km link from Delhi’s Janakpuri West to Noida’s Botanic Garden Metro station. The Kalindi Kunj to Botanic Garden Metro corridor is also part of the same project. The whole line together constitutes Delhi Metro’s Magenta line.

According to DMRC’s progress report, a copy of which is with HT, piling work on the tracks, pile caps and installing of piers along the corridor are all 100% complete. Work on the track was started in December 2014.

Once this Rs. 845-crore corridor is ready, commuters will no longer have to go to Rajiv Chowk Metro station to take the Yellow Line (Huda City Centre to Jehangirpuri) because the corridor will form a ringed route and connect Botanic Garden station with Hauz Khas station via Okhla bird sanctuary, Kalindi Kunj and Kalkaji temple station.

“This link will connect Noida’s commercial hub – Sector 18 – directly with South Delhi areas like Jamia Nagar, Sarita Vihar, Okhla, Kalkaji and Greater Kailash among others,” said Saumya Srivastava, deputy chief executive officer (DCEO), Noida authority.

Noida’s Botanic Garden would become the largest interchange outside Delhi once this link is made operational.
