Odisha Assembly elections highlights: 35% voter turnout recorded till 1 pm

The fate of five Biju Janata Dal ministers, ex-minister and the current Congress state president will be decided in the fourth and final round of polls for the 42 of Odisha’s 147 assembly seats that are voting on April 29.More than 9.5 million voters in the 42 assembly constituencies are cast their votes across the state. There are 346 candidates in assembly constituencies. In the third phase, 71.61% of the 9.2 million voters had cast their votes for 42 Assembly constituencies on April 23.Follow highlights here

About 35 per cent voter turnout in six hours in the fourth and final phase of voting in the state, reported news agency.

Villagers in several assembly constituencies boycott polling

Villagers in several assembly constituencies have boycotted the polling protesting against the district administration for failing to provide basic facilities in their areas. Voters of Baragadia Dalitsahi in Sukinda Assembly constituency boycotted the polls against the inaction of the administration to shift them from Kalinganagar industrial area in Jajpur district, reported news agency.

Three polling officials suspended by Jajpur Collector

Three polling officials were suspended by Jajpur Collector Ranjan Kumar Das for allegedly influencing voters, reported news agency. In Binjharpur, Presiding Officers of booth number 191 Baikunthanath Mallick and booth number 135 Dhirendranath Tripathy were suspended for influencing voters, besides in Sukinda, fourth polling officer of booth number 196 Janardhan Prusty was also removed, reported news agency.

Voting for the fourth and final phase of polling for six Lok Sabha and 41 assembly constituencies witnessed 17 per cent voter turnout till 11 am.

EVM, VVPPAT snags hit polling

In the Bhadrak Lok Sabha seat, voting was delayed due to a snag in EVMs in 22 booths while in the Jagatsinghpur parliamentary constituency similar problems were reported from ten booths. In Balasore, EVM and VVPAT glitches were reported from 20 booths while in eight booths in Jajpur district had similar problems.

An estimated nine per cent of the 95.06 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the first two hours of polling on Monday in six Lok Sabha and 41 assembly constituencies of Odisha, reported news agency.
