2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Coast, highlights: Lifters Mirabai Chanu, Gururaja give IND glory

Mirabai Chanu gave India their first gold medal in women’s 48 kg weightlifting. This came soon after weightlifter P Gururaja started the day on a great note as he won the men’s 56 kg silver -- India’s first medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. More Indian lifters are expected to win medals. The Indian badminton outfit totally outclassed Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the opening pool games, winning both ties 5-0, while the women’s hockey team lost 2-3 to Wales. In basketball both men’s and women’s team lost their ties to Cameroon and Jamaica respectively. The incident took place during the men’s team pursuit as racers pelted round the banked track. The riders were unhurt but it drew a curt warning from the stadium announcer to the packed crowd at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

No weightlifter had a physio by their side to take care of their aches and niggles during a demanding day. “I don’t have a physio with me here in the competition. He was not allowed here, I did not get enough treatment coming into the competition. There is nobody, we did tell officials but nothing happened,” Chanu said.

“I had requested that my physio be allowed but he has not been allowed. But we are helping each other and managing so far.”

Gururaja, the soft-spoken wannabe-wrestler-turned-weightlifter from Karnataka, also spoke about the problems he faced.

“I’ve sustained multiple injuries. My physio is not here, so I haven’t been able to get the treatment that I need for my knee and sciatic nerve,” he said.

Many Australians see the Commonwealth Games as a sporting celebration, but for Aboriginal activists they symbolise invasion, dispossession and a culture shunted to the sidelines. 12:30 hrs IST: Having beaten the Chinese lifters to win gold at the 2017 World Championships, Mirabai Chanu is aware the Chinese will be coming strongly at her. That is why she wants to do her best at the Asian Games in Indonesia later this year.

“The Chinese will be there as also the lifters from Thailand and Korea will be there so that will be a tougher competition and therefore that is my aim. I want to do well in the Asian Games and win gold medal there,” Chanu said. “I knew the competition will not be tough here so therefore went on doing my own without bothering about what others were doing.”

Elsewhere, India will face Sri Lanka and later Pakistan in the mixed team badminton event while the women’s hockey team will take on Wales. India will challenge Jamaica in women’s basketball while among men, they will face Cameroon.

In boxing, pugilists will open their campaign while swimmers and weightlifters will be favourites to earn medals.
