According to police, the 60-year-old was fatally shot by four men in two motorcycles when he was out on morning walk near his home in Kalyanpur. He was rushed to a private hospital in Darbhanga where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Rai was a former Zilla Parishad member. His murder takes the number of politicians killed in the state in the last nine month to 10.
Following the incident, RJD supporters staged angry protests and blocked the Samastipur-Darbhanga main road disrupting vehicular traffic for more than four hours. They demanded immediate arrest of the assailants, suspension of the SHO of Kalyanpur police station and compensation for the deceased’s kin.Samastipur SP Harpreet Kaur said a massive hunt has been launched to nab the accused.
Leader of opposition, Tejashwi Yadav held the NDA government in Bihar and chief minister Nitish Kumar responsible for the incident. “Put a check on the government-protected goons. For what purpose are you sticking to the position of home minister? Criminals protected by you are killing leaders of RLSP and the RJD one by one but your lips remain sealed,” Tejashwi tweeted.
