10-year-old prodigy Anuj Dandekar shines on day two of chess tournament in Pune

Dandekar was the centre of attention after his performance on the second day of the Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial First All India Open World Chess Federation (FIDE) Rating Chess Tournament at Ganesh Kala Krida, Swargate.

Ten-year-old Anuj Dandekar was the centre of attention after his performance on the second day of the Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial First All India Open World Chess Federation (FIDE) Rating Chess Tournament at Ganesh Kala Krida, Swargate on Sunday. 

In the morning session, Anuj surprised everyone by getting the better of higher ranked Shubham Kumthekar. “I was little confused but I stuck to my game plan. The board position was equal till the middle game until he made a blunder. I got positional superiority, but he kept stretching the game till the end.I finally managed to pull out a win,” said Anuj, who trains with FIDE trainer Jayant Gokhale. 

“He is sharp and has a good potential to become a strong player in the future,” said Gokhale, who also coaches top players like grandmaster (GM) Abhimanyu Puranik,and woman grandmaster (WGM) Akanksha Hagawane. 

In the second round, international master (IM) Sharad Tilak and IM Ravi Hegde were held to draws by underdogs Greeshma Dhumal and Kush Pipada respectively. Both these Sharad and Ravi have represented India in Olympiads and Asian Championships.

(2); FM Ankit Gajwa (2) bt Abhijeet Bilpe (1); Shrey Nilkanth (1) lost to IM Anup Deshmukh (2); Pratik Patil (2) bt Abhinav Karthik (1); Greeshma Dhumal (1.5) drew with IM Sharad Tilak (1.5); Vinay Kumar Matta (2) won against Aniket Redij (1); Dipesh Kohad (1.5) drew with Sohan Phadke (1.5); Ram Prakash (2) won against Aditya Bartakke (1); Abel Chaz Hujroor (1) lost to Aditya Samant (2); IM Shashikant Kutwal (2) bt Narsinhan Bargava (1); Rujul Shinde (1) lost to IM R. Balasubramanium (2); Amardeep Bartakke (2) bt Jaiveer Mahendru (1); Kush Pipada (1.5) drew with IM Ravi Hegde (1.5).
