The importance of yoga was discussed during the one-day workshop organised by Indian Menopause Society, Pune Chapter, supported by Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, Ministry of AYUSH at the National Institute of Naturopathy which focussed on yoga for menopausal problems.

Many doctors in the city have suggested that building stronger bones and muscles before the age of 35 is important for women. This can be achieved by practising yoga or by exercising, which in turn would help women remain strong during and after menopause, as the bone starts thinning due to lack of estrogen during this phase.

Sharing her views on the occasion, K Satya Lakshmi, director, National Institute of Naturopathy said, “We allow nature to cure the processes within the body. That is naturopathy. Processes inside the body need to be guided properly to ensure good health. Being dependent on drugs and doctors for good health is not good. We can avoid many diseases through yoga and exercise. Imshamunity can also be build.”

Speaking about menopause, Lakshmi said, “There is a need to sensitise women about the benefits of yoga. Menopause is not a disease. It is a process during which the body moves from one state to another. With this, there are changes and coping mechanisms are important.”

Dr Jyoti Unni, former national president of Indian Menopause Society, said, “Many women don’t know much about menopause. There is also a lot of misunderstanding around it. Ideally, women must start working on it before they are 35 years of age.Having a good lifestyle, eating right and exercising are essential.” Dr Unni said that menopause in India is seen at an average age of 46 years. “It occurs when ovaries stop producing estrogen. Due to this, many women can suffer from problems like irritability, tiredness, boredom, rise in cholesterol level, thinning of bones and muscles,” she added.
