The competition was announced three months ago and 15 architectural colleges were invited to participate, out of which, seven submitted their designs. “It was an open competition. They were going to give us a chance to work with an architect if we win. The experience was really good as we went on the site to understand and study. There were four sites, two in Baner and two in Aundh, where every group had two sites to design. We got the Baner site where we were explained the rules and what was expected from them. Accordingly, we designed the Over-the-air market (standard for the transmission and reception of application-related information in a wireless communications system),” said Chaitrali Padamwar.

The research took into account the public interface. Residents of the contextual area were interviewed and design elements to fit their profile were incorporated in their design. The use of crates as a building module allowed them the flexibility of spaces, morphing with the user’s needs. The design, aimed at creating a landmark product, also balanced the budget by using RCC plinth and tensile roof structures.

The winning team are final-year students of Bricks group of institute’s college of architecture and received a certificate and a cash award of Rs 20,000. The consolation prize was awarded to DY Patil school of architecture students Rohan Pabale, Ashwini Shitole and Akshay Shiwarkar, who received a certificate and a cash award of Rs 10,000. The winning team worked under the guidance of architect Manali Deshmukh and had proposed innovative design ideas for the competition with the vision of market as a communal neighbourhood entity.
