Theatre director Dilip Kolhatkar passes away at 71

He was undergoing treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital since the past few days, said family members.

Dilip Kolhatkar, noted film and theatre director, passed away on Friday following prolonged illness, doctors treating him said. He was 71.

Kolhatkar, who was famous for his Marathi plays, including Moruchi Mavashi, Kavadi Chumbat and Ughadale Swargache Daar, was undergoing treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital since the past few days, said family members.

Kolhatkar also had a small stint in the Marathi film industry. Among the Marathi films he directed are Shejari Shejari and Bangadya.

According to family members, the last rites on Kolhatkar will be performed on Saturday. “Kolhatar was the master of pun. He contributed a lot to Marathi theatre and films,” said Purshottam Berde, senior Marathi producer and director.

In February, Kolhatkar’s wife Dipali was found murdered in her kitchen in their Pune residence. Following the incident, police had arrested their 19-year-old caregiver for killing her in a fit of rage.

Kolhatkar was survived by his son and daughter.
