Two days after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker Jagroop Singh was shot dead allegedly by a former Akali sarpanch over land dispute, Dharamkot police have been told to explain why they took no action after the first assault last month.

On Sunday evening, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Jagseer Singh and 15 other armed men occupied Jagroop’s field at Bhinder Kalan in Dharamkot jurisdiction of this district and started ploughing it. When the farmer objected, they allegedly killed him and injured his nephew, Pritpal Singh, and father, Jaura Singh.

“Jagseer Singh injured the family last month also when he came to grab the 5-kanal land,” the victim’s brother, Ranh Singh, stated in the first-information report (FIR). The attack was reported to the Dharamkot police. “Had the cops acted then, my brother would have been alive,” he said. The accused is said to be an Akali minister’s confidant.

After a meeting with the AAP and Congress workers, superintendent of police (headquarters) Jaswinder Singh told Dharamkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Mandeep Singh to submit a report about the inaction on the earlier FIR of August 19. The victim’s father was the complainant.

In the meeting, AAP leader Dr Ranyodh Singh demanded a murder inquiry and action against the cops. Police have booked 16 Bhinder Kalan villagers under 302 (murder) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act. Accused Jagseer Singh, Rajdeep Singh, and Manjit Singh are under treatment at Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana. AAP leaders HS Phoolka, Ramesh Grover, and Amit Puri attended Jagroop’s funeral on Tuesday.
