Agitating nurses, paramedics take protest to Joshi's residence

Continuing their protest, nurses and paramedical staff working on contractual basis on Sunday staged a demonstration outside the residence of local bodies and medical education minister Anil Joshi at Medical Enclave here.

About 50 nurses and paramedical employees, who have been protesting outside Joshi's camp office, accused the minister of ignoring them. The protesters raised slogans against Joshi, adding that they would intensify the agitation if their demands were not.

One woman is on a hunger strike for the past few days and has been taken to hospital a couple of times due to ill health.

The protesting employees are demanding regularisation as per the government policy. The protesters said despite they had completed three years of services to get regularised as per the government policy, nothing had been done to in this regard.

They said a majority of them majority of them had been on contract for almost four years but have not been regularised yet. They slammed the Punjab government for not listening to their demands.

Congress MLA joins protesting employees

Congress MLA from Amritsar West and deputy chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) Raj Kumar Verka reached at the protest site and assured support to the protesters.

"It is very shameful on the part of the Punjab government that it is not solving the issues faced by the protesting staff. Women are protesting for days but the state government is hardly bothered. People are unhappy with the SAD-BJP regime and these agitations are big indication of that," the Congress MLA said.
He assured the agitators that he will raise their issue in Chandigarh.

Minister meets agitators

In the evening, cabinet minister Anil Joshi met the agitating nurses at his camp office. The minister promised them that their demands will be raised with the government and efforts will be made to arrange a meeting with the chief minister.
