AIIMS entrance exam: Vegetable vendor’s son gets top rank in SC category

Surender Grover’s happiness knows no bounds after he topped the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) exam in the SC category. Son of a vegetable vendor, the 17-year-old secured numero uno rank in the SC category and got All India Rank 171 in the general category.

The 17-year-old boy from Jind, Haryana, came to Chandigarh a year back to take coaching classes from a private institute here in Sector 34. The AIIMS 2016 results were declared on Tuesday evening. However, many students were able to access their results only on Wednesday as the website had crashed on Tuesday.

He completed his schooling from Jawahar Navodyaya Vidyalaya Khunga Kothi School, Jind, in 2015, after which he dropped a year to prepare for the AIIMS exam. His efforts, indeed, bore fruit.

Excited to join AIIMS, Surender told HT, “I always wanted to pursue MBBS as my ultimate dream is to be become a neurologist.” Ask him why and he quickly says, “There are various brain diseases which are not discussed and people feel shy to come out about them and I want to change that.”

He disclosed that while it was not easy being away from his parents, his elder brother who is a teacher at Government School, Sector 21, never failed to motivate him. “My real source of inspiration comes from my parents who always let their children do what we wished for,” said Surender.

A proud father who sells vegetables in villages in Jind, Dharamvir Grover, said, “We used to try and visit our sons regularly in Chandigarh to keep a check on their progress be it in studies or otherwise and indeed, Surender has made us all proud.” Lauding his son’s hard work, he wished that he further climbs greater heights in life.

Surender shared his success mantra. Jo karo acchi tarhan, pura mann laga kar karo aur samjho, bas mera yahi motto hai (Whatever you do , do with all your heart- that is my motto),” he said.
