The matter was discussed at the meeting of the Sikh high priests held here on Monday but no decision was taken in this regard.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh presided over the meeting while Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Takht Keshgarh Sahib jathedar Giani Mal Singh, Harmandir Sahib head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh and Giani Sukhjinder Singh were present.

Interestingly, Takht Patna Sahib jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh did not attend the meeting. The clash had taken place between the supporters of Giani Iqbal Singh and those aligned with the Takht Patna Sahib management committee.

The clash occurred after Giani Partap Singh's appointment as additional head granthi of Takht Patna Sahib was announced to which Giani Iqbal Singh objected on the grounds that he was not consulted.

Even as the Akal Takht jathedar has received a detailed report from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on the clash, he wants ‘more evidence' so as to pinpoint those who had violated the tenets.

“We have asked for the video footage of the function. Then we will proceed,” Giani Gurbachan Singh told mediapersons. He maintained that the priests would also take into account the SGPC report and the eyewitnesses while taking a decision.

A five-member SGPC committee had on the instructions of the Akal Takht gone to Patna to get on-the-spot assessment of the clash. The panel had submitted its report to the Jathedar last week.

The SGPC claimed that all differences between the two factions of the Takht Patna Sahib had been sorted out
and an amicable working atmosphere was created.

Later, both the factions backed out of compromise and Giani Iqbal Singh refused to give his consent to the appointment of Giani Partap Singh.

On the matter reaching the judicial courts as members of both groups had got cases registered against each other, the jathedar said, “Normally we do not meddle in court matters. However, it does not behove for a jathedar (Giani Iqbal Singh) going for court hearings.”

Gurdwara trust members declared ‘tankhia’

The Akal Takht has declared eight members of Gurdwara Buddha Jaur Sahib in Rajasthan as 'tankhiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) after they failed to appear before the Takht here on Monday.

They had been summoned to the Takht sometime back to sort out matters related to the functioning of the shrine. The Takht had received certain adverse reports from people of the area about the shrine management.

“They have now been directed to appear in the next meeting of the five Sikh high priests and if they do not come further action will be taken. They will be intimated about the date of the next meeting,” the jathedar said.

Those who have been declared 'tankhiya' are Gurpartap Singh, Paramjit Singh, KS Hundal, BS Brar, Gurdip Singh, MS Nanda, Hakan Singh and Niranjan Singh.

The clergy took a serious note of reports that a section of devotees had been prohibited from entering a gurdwara in Hamilton in New Zealand.

“No one will be stopped from entering any shrine anywhere in the world. This ban, if it exists, must be
lifted immediately,” the jathedar added.
