Amritsar to host two-day mayor’s meet from Sunday

While the cash-strapped Amritsar municipal corporation is yet to ensure solutions for the garbage disposal, revenue generation, lack of development and other problems affecting the city, it is all set to host the two-day All India Council of Mayors (AICM), starting from Sunday, to discuss the problems

While the cash-strapped Amritsar municipal corporation is yet to ensure solutions for the garbage disposal, revenue generation, lack of development and other problems affecting the city, it is all set to host the two-day All India Council of Mayors (AICM), starting from Sunday, to discuss the problems affecting the municipalities across the nation.

As the city gears up to witness the assembly of more than 50 dignitaries, including mayors from 25 municipal corporations, ministers and members of Parliament during the 108th meet on October 25 and 26, the residents have urged the authorities to utilise the opportunity to seek effective solutions to the civic problems in the city.

“Garbage and revenue generation are the two main problems that have not yet been redressed so far. The MC should seize the opportunity and seek solutions to the same,” said Sanjeev Rampal, a social activist and a resident of the city.

Terming the AICM as a ‘God sent opportunity’, the residents of Bhagtanwala urged the MC authorities to interact with the representatives of other municipalities to seek environment -friendly solutions to Amritsar’s garbage problem.

“While the MC is bent on erecting a Solid Waste Treatment Plant (SWTP), there would be a many other solutions to deal with the city’s wastes. This is the best opportunity for the civic authorities to try and find out those ways and implement them,” said Sandeep Kurl, a resident.

Divulging the details of the “mayor’s meet”, Amritsar mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said this meet would provide a platform to hold healthy discussions regarding development, issuing pertaining to various MCs relating to centre and states. “Apart from mayors from various states of the country, former mayors, who are life members will also participate,” he said.

He added that the delegates would also visit Attari Border, Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Temple and Ram Tirath. Arora said higher, Madhya Pradesh technical education and skill development minister Uma Shankar Gupta and Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly speaker Kavinder Gupta were likely to attend the meet, while Anil Joshi, local bodies minister, would be the chief guest on the first day of the meet.

Kamal Sharma, president, Punjab BJP, chief parliamentary secretaries Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu and Som Nath, Punjab chief minister advisor Tikshan Sood, former Jalandhar mayor Rakesh Rathore and, BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh will be the guests of honour. Arora maintained that Avinash Rai Khanna, member, Rajya Sabha, would also address the meet on the concluding day.

As per the confirmation received by the Amritsar MC, the participating mayors and dignitaries include Vinod Chamoli, Dehradun (UK), Uma Shankar Gupta, Bhopal (MP), Subhash Patel former Mayor (life member, AICM), Barielly (UP), Anil Sole, former mayor of Nagpur, Sanjay Kumar, Begusarai (Bihar), Sheshank Shrivastav, Katni (MP), Vivek N Shaijwalkar, Gwalior, Manoj Gupta, PRO, AICM and Anil Kumar, Delhi office, Madhu Sood, former mayor (life member), Shimla (HP), Shakuntla Rajliwala, Hisar (Haryana), Manoj Garg, Haridwar (Uttrakhand), Parmod Dubey, Raipur (Chattisgarh), Meenaxi Ben Patel, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Renu Bala Bupta, Karnal (Haryana), Punam Sharma, Chandigarh, Harcharan Gohalwaria, Ludhiana, Sunil Jyoti, Jalandhar, Arun Khosla, Phagwara, Kulwant Singh, Mohali, Amrinder Bajaj, Patiala, Balwant Rai Nath, Bathinda, Shiv Kumar Sood, Hoshiarpur, Akshit Jain, Moga and Anil Vasudev, Pathankot.
