In the preliminary interrogation, accused Indian passengers Razia Begum, Shehnaz Begum, Anees Ahmad, Rais Ahmad, Arif, and Nasir Ahmad have claimed to be couriers assigned to deliver the shipment in Uttar Pradesh. There were intelligence inputs about attempts from across the border to disturb peace in Uttar Pradesh and sabotage the coming Lok Sabha elections.

"As the train arrived from Pakistan, we noticed suspicious luggage with six passengers. They were from Muzzafarnagar and carrying 11 manual grinders," said deputy commissioner of customs Gurdev Singh. "Each of the 11 machines had one pistol and two magazines concealed in a cavity in the base," he added.

Intelligence agencies, later, reached the Attari railway station and interrogated the accused in detail.
