A local court on Monday rejected the interim bail applications of all the six accused, who had allegedly drove their school mate Kulraj Bedi to commit suicide.
The court of additional session judge Lachhman Singh rejected the bail pleas of all the accused namely Nishant Kumar, Akshay Vashisht, Harsimran Walia, Rishabh Arora, Sumit Narula and Naved.
City police had registered an abetment to suicide case under Section 306 of IPC against the accused. Except Sumit Narula, all others are juvenile.
Earlier, the court of additional session judge B S Deol was to hear the case but on receiving a fax complaint, district and session judge G K Dhir transferred it to Lachhman Singh.
Meanwhile, deceased's family members, school mates and city residents sat on a peaceful dharna outside the court complex from 9.30 am onwards, ahead of hearing on the bail applications of the accused.
Pooran Sawraj Sankalp Society chairman Sanjiv Talwar, former municipal councillors Brahm Shankar Jimpa and Mohan Lal also joined them. The dharna was, however, lifted in the afternoon when the case came up for hearing.
Chief parliamentary secretary Sohan Singh Thandal has also expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and promised to take up the matter at the party level. "The police must act against the guilty whoever they are and whichever families they come from. The perpetrators must be brought to book," he said.
Kulraj, a Class-10 student of the local Gems Cambridge International School, had consumed poison after he was brutally beaten up by the accused in front of the school on February 22.
The last one week witnessed demonstrations and candle light vigil by local residents who accused police of playing in the hands of the influential.
Deceased's father Vishal Bedi said police's delaying tactics gave ample time to the accused to apply for anticipatory bails. However, he expressed satisfaction after the rejection of their bail pleas. He said he would take the fight for justice to its logical conclusion.
