Addressing mediapersons, BSF inspector general (IG), Punjab frontier, Aditya Mishra said, "Early in the morning, BSF troops of the Chanmulla border observational post (BOP) noticed the suspicious movement of three persons across the border fence. The trio was holding a plastic pipe. When they reached near the fence, our ambush party challenged them, but they continued to push the pipe through."

The BSF troops then opened fire, 92 rounds in all, and the suspected Pakistani smugglers retaliated.

After a heavy exchange of fire, the trio fled, leaving behind 10 packets of heroin.

The IG said, "During our meetings with Pakistani Rangers, we have repeatedly asked them to curb such activities. Most of the times, when we raise the issue of smuggling from the Pakistan side, the Rangers are in the denial mode."

Mishra said the BSF troops were keeping a close watch on activities along the fence and vigil had also been heightened in view of the upcoming Republic Day.
