China war hero Subedar Singh remembered

The Late Subedar of the first battalion of the Sikh Regiment was conferred with the nation’s highest military award posthumously for his devotion to duty and bravery of the highest order and making the supreme sacrifice while leading his platoon in the defence of Tongpen La, ahead of Tawang in NEFA during the 1962 Chinese aggression.

He was born at Mahla Kalan village under Baghapurana sub-division on September 28, 1921 and, after completing Class-10, he had joined the Army on September 15, 1941.

After a brief narration of his acts of gallantry, prayers were offered by priests from all religions at his memorial. Wreaths were laid by deputy commissioner Parminder Singh Gill, additional sessions judge Prashant Verma, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jatinder Singh Khaira, Col VK Thakur, in-charge of the 17 Asam Battalion of the Army as well as other army and civilian officers. Bibi Kulwant Kaur, daughter of Subedar Joginder Singh, also spoke on the occasion.

The families of the exarmymen, who scarified their lives during different wars, were honoured on the occasion and an amount of Rs 2.4 lakh was distributed among five families. The DC recalled how bravely he fought with Chinese forces.
