City roads not pedestrian-friendly

With as many as 103 lives lost in around 354 accidents that took place till November 15 this year, the city certainly isn’t a safe place for pedestrians as well as two-wheeler riders.

With as many as 103 lives lost in around 354 accidents that took place till November 15 this year, the city certainly isn’t a safe place for pedestrians as well as two-wheeler riders.

According to the UT police records, a total of 35 pedestrians (13 women and 22 men) were killed after being hit by speeding vehicles, while they were crossing road. A total of 42 two-wheeler riders (31 males, 11 females) too lost their lives in road accidents this year after being hit by speeding four wheelers. Similarly, a total of 12 cyclists too were killed in road mishaps on city roads this year.

As per the record pertaining to the fatal accidents, most victims were pedestrians, who were mowed down while crossing the road. In connection with fatal road accidents, the UT police arrested nine two-wheeler riders (five men and four women), three bus drivers, six truck and four unidentified vehicles— were arrested.

Citing urgent need for underpasses and special passages across the city, a traffic police official said in most of the mishaps happened this year, the pedestrians were killed by the speeding vehicles.

As per the records, a total of 11 women two-wheeler riders who received injuries were not wearing safety helmets.

Senior superintendent of police (traffic) Maneesh Chaudhary said to thwart pedestrians from crossing the busy road at spots other than Zebra crossings, the police department has sent a proposal for installation of iron grills on dividers. Also, he said, the department was mulling constructing underpasses.
