As cops Kulwinder Singh and Sher Singh allegedly hit the commuters, they started exchanging arguments with the cops opposing their action. A team of city police also reached on the spot and tried to take the youth to the police station, but allowed them to go home later.

“Then cops were not ready to listen to us and ‘slapped’ me. We just opposed their action of deflating the tyres. We were beaten up in the market and other commuters were witness. We had done nothing wrong but they also tried to take us to the police station and ‘wanted to teach a lesson’, said Amrit, who had come from Rasoolpur Chhanna village here.

“I told the cops if the bike was parked at a wrong place, they could challan it, but it was totally unfair to deflate the tyres. We were ready to pay fine, but the cops harassed us which was not a democratic way to deal with the public,” said Baljit Singh, who parked his bike on the road.

However, after some heated arguments, police allowed the men to go without action, but issued a challan for wrong parking. “The youth misbehaved with our cops. Cops did not slap the youths and they just entered in a verbal spat, but no scuffle was reported” said Parminder Singh, traffic in-charge. “Police issued a challan as they violated traffic rules,” he added.
