A day after the confessional statement of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) women’s wing district president Jaspal Kaur Dharni’s driver, the Patiala police said it got some leads pointing at the involvement of family members in the double murder case.

The decomposed bodies of Dharni’s son Ajit Singh was found from his residence in Old Bishan Nagar on Tuesday night, while the police recovered her body from the Bhakra mainline.

The police also recovered Dharni’s Innova SUV from the location identified by Dharni’s driver in Sangrur. On Wednesday, the police detained Dharni’s part-time drive who confessed to the crime. Surprisingly, no family member of the SAD leader filed a missing complaint with the police.

Sources say following the driver’s interrogation, the police got some vital clues and are working on different theories, including the alleged involvement of her family members in the crime. “We are also focussing on the property angle and are keeping a close watch on Dharni’s relatives and husband as they had estranged relations,” said a police official.

Dharni’s husband Gurmukh Singh lives in the United States with his first wife and children. Dharni was Gurmukh’s second wife and they had married in 1988.

Dharni’s brother-in-law Jasbir Singh didn’t name anyone in his complaint. “Dharni and her husband were not on talking terms and were putting up at separate places before Gurmukh went to the US some two years ago,” said Jasbir.
“We came to know that Gurmukh visited India for two months recently but cut short his visit and returned on March 27,” Jasbir claimed.

The police have registered a case under Sections 365 (kidnapping) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against unidentified persons.

Senior superintendent of police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said: “We are working of various theories. Nothing can be said at this point of time. We have got some vital clues and the case will be cracked soon.”

He refused to comment when asked about the involvement of a family member in the crime. The police are expected to come up with complete information by Friday.
